Spring Cleaning For Your Smile
Top Tips From Abbey Road Dental!
Spring is the time of year most of us will spend time clearing away those cobwebs in the home, making the decor feel fresh and renewed ready for sunnier weather and lighter days. Spring cleaning doesn’t have to focus around your home though, in fact, this time of year is a great time to think about improving important areas of your life too.
In not too long you will already be a quarter of the way through 2019! Time goes so fast, it makes sense to think about your goals and direction regularly, and especially in Spring when everything feels so full of new opportunity.
With that strong sense of renewal and improvement in mind, Abbey Road Dental wants to help you focus on spring cleaning your oral health regime. Your smile is an asset and it pays to take care of it in spring and all year round. Here are our top tips for ensuring your smile remains fresh and beautiful for spring, and the rest of 2019 and beyond:
Check You Are Using The Right Equipment
Your toothbrush is a valuable tool when it comes to removing the plaque and food debris from your teeth every day. You can choose electric toothbrushes which can have rotation, vibration and other useful features, and the most effective tend to combine most or all of these. You can also choose manual toothbrushes which come in lots of styles and sizes and the main difference lies with whether the brush part is soft, hard or medium.
You can get advice on the best type of brush for your needs from our Abbey Road Dental hygienist, who will also be pleased to provide guidance on how to use the brush effectively. They will also advise you on which type of toothpaste to use too. Regardless of the brush you choose we recommend you change it every 3 months or when the brush begins to wear (whichever happens first) and you keep it separate from other toothbrushes, protected from the bathroom environment where possible.
Start Flossing
Flossing is an important part of dental routines in America, but there is still a lot of work to do to get it included in the oral health routines of those here in the UK. Are you flossing? If you’re not, now could be a great time to start. Flossing helps you to reach the bits of debris that even the best toothbrush can’t reach. Flossing is also a really great dental product to carry around in your bag for quick freshening up.
Tighten Up Your Regime
Your daily oral health regime can always be improved. Ask yourself these questions about your routine to spot how you might be able to improve your teeth cleaning process:
- Are you cleaning for the full two minutes when you clean your teeth?
- Does each arch get the same amount of brushing?
- Do you brush your tongue?
- Are you flossing?
- Are you brushing along the gum line
- Are you cleaning out the areas between your gums and cheeks?
- Are you avoiding rinsing your mouth after brushing? It is important you only spit, so the toothpaste is able to work its magic
If you need help with your brushing regime your NW8 hygienist can help.
Eating Your Way To A Better Smile
A great oral health regime will not work if it is trying to correct a terrible diet. It is so important that you eat foods full of vitamins and minerals for the health of your entire body. The food you eat will directly affect your smile and your teeth are actually the first part of the digestion process.
Do eat lots of great sources of calcium like milk or fortified non-dairy milks, or leafy greens, colorful fruits and vegetables and drink lots of water. Avoid starchy white carbs like crackers or lots of white bread, sugary and acidic drinks, and anything that might stain your teeth if consumed in excess. If you smoke or drink in excess, a great diet won’t be able to repair the damage done, so we would always recommend you seek help and support in reducing or stopping those habits first.
Visit Your Local Dentist Regularly
Visits to the dentist at least every 6 months ensure that any dental issues are picked up quickly and treated early. We can also ensure you are being supported properly with any change in health status that may affect your teeth and gums, such as a diabetes diagnosis, pregnancy or new medication. Regular visits to your St John’s Wood dentist are an important 6 monthly spring clean and checkup for anyone who cares about their smile.
Does Your Smile Need A Little More Than A Spring Clean?
Spring cleaning your smile is a great idea, but sometimes, it isn’t enough.
