Avoid Teeth Whitening At A Beauty Clinic!
It isn’t legal and could cause you real problems.
Within the last decade there has been a huge increase in the availability of cosmetic dentistry for the general public. Celebrities have spoken about the treatments they used to get the ‘perfect smile’ and treatments became more affordable and available to meet demand.
The problem is, as well as qualified dentists offering these treatments, spas and beauty salons have been offering them as well, particularly teeth whitening. Often treatments like these are offered at cut price in salons and beauty clinics, but are they safe or legal?
Beauty salons often offer these treatments as a way to create an entire beauty makeover, along with tanning, nails and hair services. According to the GDC (General Dental Council) though, teeth whitening by anybody who is not registered with them as an authorised dental professional, is actually illegal!
The Law
Just 5 years ago, new product laws came in to being to ensure any whitening product containing anything between 0.1% and 6% hydrogen peroxide would not be on offer to the general public. Instead, products like these are only legal for use by a dentist i.e. a GDC professional. Anybody breaching these rules is directly breaking the law.
Teeth Whitening In Spas & Salons
The way spas and salons might get around the hydrogen peroxide laws is by using products weaker than 0.1%. The problem with that is that products that weak probably won’t do much at all in the way of whitening the teeth. To try and get more of an effect they might leave a weaker product on for longer which could then burn the gums. In contrast, dentists will always check gums for suitability before whitening and also apply suitable gum protection. Beauty salons may not do this and they may leave the solution on for enough time to damage the gums as well.
Of course this is assuming that the salon or spa is acting legally! There are unfortunately many individuals and companies operating illegally, using full strength hydrogen peroxide for whitening when they are not registered with the GDC. In these instances all kinds of damage can occur including permanent gum problems.
The same risk is associated with online teeth whitening kits you can order from the internet. You cannot guarantee what is in the whitening solution, and the trays provided will not fit your teeth and gums in a way that effectively protects the mouth.
