Inlays & Onlays With Abbey Road Dental
Your St John’s Wood dental team answer your questions….
Here at Abbey Road Dental we offer a wide range of cosmetic and general dentistry, including inlays and onlays.
What Are Inlays & Onlays?
Inlays and onlays are a more advanced version of a filling, and you’re not likely to see them available at every dental practice yet because they are a fairly advanced technique. They represent the ‘gold standard’ of fillings and we are very pleased to be able to offer them to our patients. If you haven’t heard of them before, to look at, they are tooth coloured and look like the very top of a tooth. Although similar to a crown, they are not the same. They reinforce the tooth back to around 80-85% of the strength it began with, and tend to be used when a white filling cannot be placed directly into the mouth or when a large original filling needs to be taken out or replaced.
What Is The Difference Between An Onlay And An Inlay
An inlay is like a filling and sits just inside the very top edges of the tooth, whereas an onlay has a lot more to it and will go beyond the very top edges of the tooth. Each patient’s individual situation determines which type they require. They tend to be used when the gap to be filled is fairly large.
Are Onlays & Inlays Better Than Amalgam Fillings?
By and large, yes. They are more advanced and superior in their design, durability, purpose and material compared to amalgam fillings. Medically, there isn’t a reason not to use amalgam but, inlays and onlays are created to fit the unique needs of your individual tooth, and are custom crafted in a laboratory. Onlays and inlays also strengthen the structure of the tooth, whereas a normal filling can actually weaken it.
Can I Get An Onlay Or Inlay In The Same Appointment As A Consultation
We would need to provide you with a consultation or checkup to determine your needs before taking an impression of the tooth or teeth needing the onlays or inlays. Around a week or more later a second appointment is needed for the bonding of the inlays or onlays. So you would require more than one appointment for the entire process, because the onlays or inlays are custom made for your teeth.
Are Onlays & Inlays More Expensive Than Standard Fillings
The cost of onlays and inlays can be given to you following a consultation and examination at Abbey Road Dental in St John’s Wood, NW8. Whilst we would like to provide a guide price, we need to check and discuss your needs and suitability for the treatment so that we can provide you with a treatment plan and quotation. Our treatments are personalised and uniquely designed just for you, the same as our onlays and inlays!
